IQ assessments are standardized instruments that used to identify cognitive areas of strengths and weaknesses. shutterstock_219784663It is designed to measure a variety of cognitive domains such as verbal reasoning, visual spatial reasoning, fluid reasoning, working memory and processing speed which impacts an individual’s overall intellectual functioning. It is often done as a part of the diagnostic process for evaluating giftedness, intellectual disabilities, and other learning and behavioral disorders. IQ assessments are unlike a school examination.

Every child is unique and has a different cognitive profile. By understanding a child’s cognitive strengths and weakness, parents are able to make informed decisions about the most appropriate school or learning program which best matches the child’s ability level and supports the child’s needs. Intelligence tests also help psychologist make recommendations about the kind of teaching which would benefit a child the most, and can be used to develop individualized teaching strategies.

IQ assessments should be conducted by registered psychologists who have been trained to administer and interpret these assessments. At Thomson Paediatric Centre, our team consisting of clinical and educational psychologists are able to conduct these assessments to help parents better understand their child’s unique cognitive profile. Our psychologists use the Wechsler and Stanford Binet scales; both of which are recognized internationally and in Singapore. IQ assessments are available for children as young as 2 years old.
