May has been teaching children in mainstream schools and special schools for more than 25 years, both in Hong Kong and in Singapore. She obtained her mainstream teacher qualification in Hong Kong. In the area of special education, she obtained Bachelor of Philosophy in Education (Special Educational Needs) from University of Exeter as well as Advanced Certificate in Autism for children from University of Birmingham.
May taught in APSN Chaoyang School and STEP Programme in Rainbow Centre in Singapore. For 14 years, she was the programme co-ordinator for Autism Spectrum Disorders Programme in Chaoyang School. She worked with children with Autism Spectrum Disorders, ADHD, learning and behavioural difficulties. Besides teaching, May was actively involved in curriculum design, programme planning, professional development and parent support.
May received NCSS-MOE Outstanding Special Education Teacher Award and the Innovation Award in 2008. Since then, her contribution to the special education sector extended to national platforms. In collaboration with Ministry of Education, May was in the pioneer team in prototyping social emotional learning for children with special needs using PATHs Curriculum from Pennsylvania, US. She presented her work at MOE Excel Fest, Sped Learning Day, PATHs Conference (US) and the 20th Asian Conference on Intellectual Disabilities.
